With all respect
Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. (1 Peter 2:18 ESV)
Perhaps in this modern era the word “servant” merely alludes to a person who employment is to cater to another person. This is hardly derogatory; everyone is a servant to someone.
In some translations, the word “slave” is selected which does carry a harsher meaning. This meaning is even harsher when one considers the original context. In the Roman world when our LORD walked, slaves owe everything to their masters, even their lives!
Therefore, with that in mind what Peter is asking them to do here is absurdly difficult. It’s easy to subject yourself to a good master, but the unjust? Ones who may abuse their slaves in any and many ways unimaginable? Yet, this is what the inspired apostle wrote.
Peter point is simple: If you sin and are beaten, then you’re deserving of it whereas if you’re beaten because you’re innocent, this proves you’re beyond reproach.
Remember the grace of our LORD Jesus Christ. He was without sin and He was crucified for it.
Hence, as you continue through the day, continue with humbleness. Remember, you do no wrong in doing so. Be wise, but when you’re in chains (as slaves are), remember it’s best to remain submissive, that the LORD himself may bless you.
Prayer Points:
- Thank Him that we are given a spirit of humbleness in our hearts. Ask Him for strength in times of testing
- Pray for those unduly oppressed, that they may know the One they can cry out to, who will hear them
Prayer of the day:
Dear LORD, we are each in submission to something be it another person, corporate, culture and societal demands and so on. But above all, I thankful that the One I truly submit to is yourself, my LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ. Teach me to be humble, even up to the cross that you have me carry.
Give me strength to endure. Thank you LORD.
