Role of Christians in Malaysia

The youths of the Methodist Youth Fellowship learnt what their and other Christians’ roles were in Malaysia on 12th May, 2013 during MYF.

MYF Cell Group leader, Colin Wong writes on:

Hannah Yeoh in MYF

There is a common saying that religion and politics should not mix. However, if God calls us into positions of responsibility that may eventually involve politics, how then are we to reconcile His instructions with this unwritten rule that religions are not to be involved in ruling a country?

This was a question that Hannah Yeoh intended to answer when she came to Trinity Methodist Church Petaling Jaya to speak to the youth in MYF. As the newly elected speaker of the Selangor State Assembly, she felt that it was important for everyone, both young and old, to become familiar with the basics of government and how God fits into all of that.

Her talk covered two main points: the importance of knowing the roles of politicians according to their positions, and the importance of always obeying God when setting a course of action. She stressed on the fact that politicians are often given calls by citizens demanding that a certain task be carried out in their state, which, while well within their rights, is often directed at the wrong party or politician. This was from her personal experience in Selangor, and she noted that responding to these legitimate but misdirected demands is a counter-productive chore that she has to perform on a regular basis that detracts from her true duties. Hence her stressing on the importance of people learning about the roles of various politicians, as every person in Malaysia has the right and power to hinder or assist those in positions of responsibility.

Later on, she spoke about her journey into politics from a background of studying and practising law and managing events. In particular, on how God had opened doors for her that otherwise could not have been opened if she had not prayed and listened to Him. Whilst it is good to have a plan in life, it is also important to keep in touch with what God has in mind. Overall, the gist of her message was that one should seek God and obey Him first, and He will set everything in place and open doors once His instructions are followed.
